Open Door Workshop: Working with Pathogen Genomes

Hi all,

Thought this might be interesting.

Following on from the success of last year the Wellcome Trust are
running the second genomics course run by us at the Pathogen Sequencing
Unit. The course details are pasted below but in essence it will cover
all the analyses that we perform on our genomes and the computer based
'tools' that we use for annotation and data mining. From experience the
course also acts as an ideal opportunity for you to talk to the people
who are actually doing the work here.

If you are interested see the more comprehensive details are below or go
to the Wellcome Trust website:
http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/en/1/bioserssswpg.html.

Best regards,
Ana

*Open Door Workshops*

*Working with Pathogen Genomes*

*9-12 February 2004
Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, Hinxton, Cambridge, UK*

The three-day residential workshop 'Working with Pathogen Genomes' is
designed to enable participants to analyse and interpret genomic data
generated 'in house' or taken from public databases. A central theme
will be the interpretation of results using multiple lines of evidence.
The workshop will include demonstrations and practical training in the
use of the latest freely available sequence analysis tools.

This Open Door Workshop is aimed at lab-based biologists (PhD students
and postdoctoral researchers) who have a strong interest in utilizing
the genome sequences of prokaryotic or small eukaryotic pathogens.

The workshop has been designed to cover the theory and methods for
sequence analysis and data interpretation. Each element of the course
will have 'hands on' content centred around the use of Sanger Institute
software for sequence viewing and analysis (Artemis) and comparative
genomics (ACT).

Participants will be encouraged to bring their own data, as there will
be time set aside to work, with assistance, on their own projects.

*Programme*

  1. * Introduction to Genomics and Artemis
     *
         * Overview of genome sequencing strategies and genome analysis.
         * The basics of UNIX.
         * Understanding DNA sequence data formats.
         * Using Artemis as a sequence analysis tool for prokaryote and
           small eukaryotic genomes.

  2. * De novo sequence analysis
     *
         * Gene prediction and the construction of gene models.
         * The use of other methods to support gene predictions.

  3. * Database and motif searches
     *
         * Using public databases to add value to gene prediction.
         * Principles and application of motif and domain searches.
         * Using web based sequence analysis tools.

  4. * Sequence analysis on a larger scale
     *
         * Applying search tools to large scale projects.
         * Data interpretation.
         * Annotation.

  5. * Comparative genomics and essential web-based genomic resources
     *

   * Extensive hands on experience of the Artemis genome Comparison
     Tool (ACT).
   * Web-based information resources.

The course includes a series of invited seminars by distinguished
speakers who will present
state-of-the-art subjects.

Participants
Applicants should be postdoctoral scientists or senior PhD students
engaged in relevant
research. The course is subsidised by the Wellcome Trust for scientists
based in academic
institutions anywhere in the world. This is a residential course,
without exception, and there is a
charge of £275 towards board and lodging costs. Please see below
regarding additional
documentation.

Applications
There are no formal application forms, but applicants should send a hard
copy of their full CV
together with a 300-word outline of their current and ongoing research
plans, indicating the
relevance of the course, to:

Please note that documentation supporting the application is required
from the applicant's
Supervisor/Head of Department. This can be included with the application
or forwarded
separately.

Closing date for applications is Friday 21 November 2003.
Notification of places will be by early January 2004 at the latest.

Please note that payment in full will be required by 16 January 2004.
