Temporary, non-tenure track, federal funds, to begin July/August 2005. *Duties:* Works with the project's multi-disciplinary program to assess and monitor tropical reef algae of the U.S. Pacific Islands (Main Hawaiian Islands, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, American Samoa, US Pacific Remote Island Areas, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands). Incumbent will help with efforts to qualitatively and quantitatively identify and characterize algal communities on shallow-water (< 36 m) coral reef ecosystems in National Marine Fisheries (NMFS), Coral Reef Ecosystems Division (CRED) jurisdictional areas. The incumbent will spend up to several months a year at sea on board NOAA research vessels serving as the team leader of a 2-person algal team and conducting algal monitoring surveys using the Preskitt method (Preskitt, Vroom & Smith, 2004). On shore, the incumbent will be located at the CRED Kewalo Basin research facility located in Honolulu, Hawaii and will identify algal specimens to species and conduct benthic percent cover analyses of digital photoquadrat images. The incumbent will be expected to aid with preparation and submission of manuscripts for publication in reports and referred scientific literature, often assuming the role of first author. The incumbent will assist in preparing, maintaining, and troubleshooting research equipment including scuba diving gear, digital cameras, small boats and motors, and other scientific equipment needed for field operations. Minimum qualifications: PhD from an accredited college or university in Phycology, Marine Botany, Botany or related field. Three to five (3-5) years of marine research work experience which includes data analysis, report writing, and marine underwater survey techniques of coral reef ecosystems. One to three (1-3) years of experience in identification of tropical Pacific algal species. Previous experience at sea for extended periods of time (2 weeks or more) aboard oceanographic research or fisheries vessels. The incumbent must have excellent SCUBA diving skills and have AAUS scientific diving status. Good experimental and communication skills. Ability to pursue research with minimum guidance. *Pay range:* $40,000 annual stipend.
