STATUS: News (official)
TITLE: PhD position in Computational Cosmology at the
Astrophysical Institute Potsdam
ABSTRACT: The Astrophysical Institute Potsdam (AIP) invites
applications for a PhD position in the Emmy Noether Research Group
"AMIGA: Adaptive Multi-Grid Investigations of Galaxy Assembly" under the
supervision of Dr. Alexander Knebe.

The position is devoted to the formation and evolution of galaxies in
numerical simulations of the Universe. Besides of performing and analysing
such simulations the student should primarily engage in improving existing
software tools, namely implementing additional physics such as cooling,
star formation and supernova feedback. The successful applicant should
have a great interest in numerical algorithms, code development ($C$) and
parallel programming (MPI) and preferentially an astrophysical background.

In addition to the requirements detailed above applicants should hold a
final degree in physics (Diploma or M.Sc.). The initial appointment is
for two years with a possible extension of a third year taken successful
research for granted. The salary is based upon the German federal public
service scale (BAT-O IIa/2). The position also includes a generous
allowance for participations in (inter-)national conferences during the
PhD and a summer/winter school during the first year.

The AIP is a scientific institute providing a highly vibrant research
environment ranging from solar physics over (extra-)galactic astronomy to
cosmology. More than 70 scientists work on a variety of astrophysical
topics. The AIP provides excellent working conditions, a PhD program with
special lectures, seminars and practical training. It hosts unique
Linux-based supercomputer facilities dedicated solely to astrophysics and
well suited for the tasks of both announced PhD positions.

Besides of numerous partnerships and collaborations the AIP leads the
survey RAVE (RAdial Velocity Experiment) which finds one of its
applications as an observational counterpart to the theoretical study of
disrupting (dwarf) galaxies outlined above. The AIP is also tightly
connected to the Astronomy Department of Potsdam University. The AIP is an
equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from women, disabled
persons and underrepresented minorities.

The AIP is situated in Potsdam-Babelsberg, at the southwestern border to
Berlin. It has convenient public transport connections to both central
Potsdam as well as cosmopolitan Berlin. Both cities offer a rich cultural
environment and living in the "new heart of Europe" is as exciting as
interesting.

The position is open until a suitable candidate has been found. The
starting date can be agreed upon individually but is preferably in
summer/autumn 2005. Please send your application (email submission
preferred) with a CV and other relevant certificates (e.g. M.Sc./Diploma)
