==========================================================================

ESRC Studentship: Geography of School Effects

Applications are invited for a full-time research studentship funded by the
Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) on the topic of 'Geography of
School Effects'.

The student will be expected to develop their own research on the themes of
the relationship between school effectiveness, school location, school
choice and parental relocation, thereby addressing current debates
concerning the realities of educational effectiveness and the effects of
quasi-markets in education. The studentship is linked to research on the
same topic that will be carried out by the ESRC National Centre for
Research Methods (NCRM) node 'Learning Environment for Multilevel Modeling
Applications (LEMMA)' located at University of Bristol. Applications that
include innovation in either quantitative or qualitative (or both) research
methods would be welcome. The student will be enrolled in the doctoral
programme (MPhil/PhD) at the Graduate School of Education (GSOE),
University of Bristol, and will be supervised by Dr Sally Thomas (GSOE) and
Prof Kelvyn Jones (Dept of Geography).

Candidates will be eligible for either an ESRC '1+3' or '+3' award - that
is they may or may not have already completed a Masters level degree in
research methods (or equivalent) at an outlet recognised by ESRC.
Successful candidates will have their fees paid and will receive a living
allowance of £12,000 p.a. for up to four years.

Candidates should complete and return an application form for the GSOE
doctoral programme (MPhil/PhD), which can be obtained at
http://www.bris.ac.uk/education/programmes/doctoral/phd/entry. The
application should make clear that it is for the ESRC linked studentship
on 'Geography of School Effects'. Candidates should outline a research
project they would like to carry out within the broad framework of the
studentship described above. The closing date for applications is 20 June
2005 and selected candidates may be invited to attend for interviews soon
afterwards. Further particulars of this opportunity and enquiries about
the nature of the ESRC NCRM/LEMMA linked studentship should be addressed to
S.Thomas@DROPMEbristol.ac.uk. However, enquiries specifically about the
MPhil/PhD programme and the application process should be addressed to
Sally.Barnes@DROPMEbristol.ac.uk or Jacqui.Upcott@DROPMEbristol.ac.uk.
