                  awards short-term fellowships
ABSTRACT: The German Historic Institute in Washington DC awards
short-term fellowships with a duration of one to six months to German and
American doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars in the scientific
fields of German History, History of German-American relations, and the
role of Germany and America in international relations. Applications may
be composed either in German or English. The next closure date for
applications will be October 15, 2005.

For German applicants there is also the opportunity to apply for a
fellowship in the field of American history. Preference will be given to
postdoctoral projects which aim at the preparation of the "second book" (a
second substantial monograph comparable to the German
Habilitationsschrift).

The projects carried out must refer to source materials located in the
USA. Furthermore the fellows are expected to present their results at the
German Historic Institute in Washington during their stay.

Doctoral students will be awarded a monthly allowance of 1,581 EUR,
postdoctoral students will obtain 2,650 EUR. Fellows from Germany will
furthermore receive reimbursement for their flight costs from and to the
United States. The fellowship may be prolonged for one or more months but
only up to a maximum duration of six months.
