TYPE OF NEWS: Information for post-docs
STATUS: News (official)
TITLE: VolkswagenFoundation: Lichtenberg Professorships
ABSTRACT: The Volkswagen Foundation invites young researchers to
take part in its scholarship program "Lichtenberg Professorships". It is
intended to support about 10 to 12 professorships, all at universities in
Germany, whereas applications are also open to non-German nationals.
Deadline for the submission of applications is November 1, 2005.

There are no thematic ristrictions. The funding is available equally to
applicants from the humanities and the social sciences, or the natural and
engineering sciences as well as medicine. Proposals in the field of
natural sciences, engineering sciences, and medicine are to be submitted
in English, accompanied by a summary in German and English. A five-year
period of funding is envisaged with an amount of EUR 0.8 to 1.5 million
per professorship, depending on the requirements of the respective
research area and the candidates' individual situation.

Requirements:
- W1 Professorship: Applicants should be less then 35 years old and have
at least two years professional experience after the PhD award, preferable
with some experience working abroad.
- W2 Professorship: Applicants must have obtained their PhD at least four
years previously. Candidates for these professorships should preferably be
returning to Germany from abroad. At any rate, a change of the academic
environment has to have taken place during the last five years or is
intended with the professorship applied for.
- W3 Professorship: Candidates are "five-star" research scientists and
scholars, up to their mid-forties with an international reputation.
