Subject: Call for nominations for the 2004 ELSO Early Career Award

The time has come to submit your nomination for ELSO's 2004 Early Career Award, which will be presented at ELSO's annual congress this year in Nice on the beautiful French Cote d'Azur (48 September).

Each year, the ELSO Early Career Award recognises the outstanding achievements of a young scientist working in Europe. Previous winners were Elisa Izaurralde (2000), Maria Blasco (2002) and Juergen Knoblich (2003).

ELSO is now calling on all its members and readers of The ELSO Gazette to nominate candidates for the fourth Early Career Award.

The award will be made to a woman or man who has made a very significant contribution to the molecular life sciences during their early career as an independent scientist in Europe. The award will normally go to someone who obtained his or her PhD less than 10 years ago, but exceptional circumstances, such as a career break to care for family, will be taken into account.

You should submit your nominations to the Editor of The ELSO Gazette by replying to this e-mail before 19 April. Include the name of the scientist you wish to nominate, the name and address of the institution where he or she currently works, and their e-mail address. Your nominee must be working in Europe. ELSO will ask the nominees to submit their curricula vitae directly to the organization.

The prize of Euros 1000 is sponsored by Urban and Fischer Verlag, the German publisher of the European Journal of Cell Biology, and it includes a one-year subscription to the journal. In addition, the winner will have the opportunity to present her or his work in a lecture at the Nice meeting.

The winner will be selected by ELSO's Career Development Committee and will be announced in the August issue of The ELSO Gazette.

Sincerely

Carol Featherstone
on behalf of ELSO's Career Development Committee
