ESF: Call for Programme Proposals

---------- Forwarded message ----------

FOR INFORMATION AND DISSEMINATION

The ESF Standing Committee for the Physical and Engineering Sciences (PESC) herewith launches (1 September 2004) a call for proposals for ESF
Scientific Programmes.? PESC wishes proposals to address NOVEL SCIENCE in one or more of the following fields: chemistry, physics,
mathematics, information sciences and technology, engineering sciences, and materials sciences and engineering.? Multi-disciplinary proposals
based in these areas, including those involving fields within the remit of other ESF Standing Committees, are also welcome.? (For the current
list of ESF/PESC Programmes see http://www.esf.org/pesc/programmes )

An ESF Scientific Programme is a networking activity covering all domains in the research spectrum, bringing together key researchers and
research groups, usually for four or five years, to address a major scientific issue at the European level.?

Key objectives include sharing knowledge and expertise, developing new techniques, training young scientists, bringing together nationally
funded programmes in a European coordinated activity and creating interdisciplinary fora.?

ESF Programmes are funded on an à-la-carte principle by ESF Member Organisations (national research councils for the most part) which decide
to contribute (there is no obligation on them to do so).? The launching of an ESF Programme is dependent on sufficient financial support
having been obtained from Member Organisations.

Following peer review, it is expected that the Committee will recommend in April 2005 4,5, or 6 proposals to ESF Member Organisations for
launching early in 2006.?

The deadline for submission of proposals is 31 October 2004.

Further details, including a section on "Making A Programme Proposal", are available at
http://www.esf.org/esf_article.php?domain=1&activity=5&article=436&page=1112&chapter=0

Please feel free to circulate this message to anyone who might be interested.
