The Marie Curie Fellowship Association and the University of East Anglia, in cooperation with the European Thematic Network ETNET21, are organising a Euroconference on 2-4 September 2002 on the theme of "Science for Water Policy: the implications of the Water Framework Directive", in Norwich, UK.

Sponsors

This event is supported by the European Commission as a High Level Scientific Conference (contract number : HPCF-CT-2001-00351), and is co-sponsored by the UK Environment Agency.

Conference theme and structure

This 3-day interdisciplinary conference will focus on how science can contribute to policy, in the context of the Water Framework Directive, covering all aspects of water management from groundwater to surface water, from freshwater ecosystems to estuaries and coastal waters. The conference will mix keynote speeches from key actors in the European water sector (European Commission, NGOs, Industry, National Governments), and scientific papers presented in parallel sessions dedicated to the main areas of the Water Framework Directive (surface and groundwater ecology and chemistry, hydrogeomorphology, economics of water use, etc.). The final programme will be adapted to reflect the variety of papers selected. The last day will include a short summary of each session, and a round table with representatives from the main interest groups (EC, NGO, government, industry) to discuss issues relating to the implementation of the Water Framework Directive and new research needs, followed by a field trip to the Norfolk Broads.

Call for abstracts (closed)

Scientists from all disciplines, and young scientists in particular, are encouraged to submit an abstract for oral or poster presentation on themes broadly related to the Water Framework Directive, including for example:
  • Analysis of pressures and impacts on river basins - identification of significant anthropogenic pressures and assessment of their impact on water bodies.
  • Towards good ecological and chemical status:
    • heavily modified water bodies
    • inland surface waters
    • groundwater
    • transitional and coastal waters
  • Tools and methods for monitoring and assessment of water status
  • Legal, administrative and political changes needed to implement the Directive
  • Participatory approaches for sustainable water management and communication with the public
  • Economic analysis - economic analyses of water uses, cost-recovery, cost-effectiveness analysis of policy measures, etc.
  • Integrated river basin management
  • Developing GIS systems to aid implementation of the WFD
For more information on these and related themes, potential participants are referred to the EC pages on the Water Framework Directive, and in particular the information sheets of the Common Implementation Strategy document (http://europa.eu.int/comm/environment/water/water-framework/index_en.html)

Extended abstracts of up to two pages (including illustrations) should be submitted electronically by 12 July to swap@mariecurie.org. They must be 1.5 lines spaced, on Times New Roman - 11pt and must list the title of the paper, the authors (s) name(s), affiliations, full address, facsimile/telephone numbers and E-mail. Authors should indicate whether the abstract is for an oral or poster presentation, and include keywords indicating the broad field/discipline(s) to which the paper is related. Presentations should be suitable to a multi-disciplinary audience. Authors will be notified of acceptance by the end of July. Accepted papers will be published in the Conference proceedings and selected papers will be considered for journal/edited book publication.

Location

The conference will take place at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. The School of Environmental Sciences is renowned for its interdisciplinary research in several areas including climate change, environmental economics, environmental risk and water related research. The University offers good conference facilities and en suite accommodation for up to 100 participants.

UEA is set in 320 acres of rolling parkland just three miles from the centre of Norwich. The campus buildings include many designed by key British architects of the late 20th century. The campus offers many attractions such as the recently opened Sportspark, provididing a 50M Olympic pool, fitness centre and facilities for over 50 sports in one of the most complete sports complexes in England, and the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts, which houses the internationally renowned art collection of Sir Robert and Lady Sainsbury. The conference will be held in the Elizabeth Fry building, considered by Building Magazine to be one of the "best buildings ever" for its energy efficiency, user comfort and design. The city centre of Norwich is only a 20-minute bus ride from the UEA campus. The city's medieval centre of cobbled streets and flint-built churches remains largely intact and the most prominent high rise buildings are the magnificent 11th-century cathedral and imposing castle, which still dominate the skyline.
